THE PROBLEM

Traumatic injuries are the biggest global health crisis in the world today causing 2x more deaths than HIV/AIDS, TB & Malaria COMBINEDHowever, what truly makes orthopaedic injuries dwarf other global health problems is the 40 MILLION permanent disabilities that occur EVERY YEAR.

Most of these deaths & injuries occur in the developing world, where survivors experience permanent disabilities that cause a devastating ripple effect into their society. Creating a:

  • Personal Burden – Living as an amputee without prosthetics, therapy, or institutional support.
  • Social Burden – Victims often become outcasts with their families forced into caregiving.
  • Financial Burden – Victims cannot work or go to school turning breadwinners into an economic drain.

OUR GOAL

Our goal with the SMART Course is to combat the global orthopaedic trauma crisis, using advanced surgical education as a vehicle to save lives and prevent disabilities.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Education is the key. Through our extensive experience, we understand for true, lasting impact our programs must be sustainable, adaptable and locally-driven. Our approach is to partner with existing in-country leaders and teaching institutions to tailor a program specifically addressing the distinct challenges of their country.  We alone are incapable of solving a country’s trauma burden, but by investing in education we empower generations of surgeons to give brighter futures to their patients.

OUR SOLUTION

The Surgical Management And Reconstructive Training (SMART) Course. An international, advanced surgical training program designed to teach skills that prevent amputations, restore limb function, and better equip orthopaedic care providers for their unique medical realities.

Working in partnership with local leaders, together we develop a curriculum and deliver a course that includes: lectures from world-class faculty, discussions addressing real local patient cases, and a hands-on surgical training in a cadaver lab for every attendee.

From the classroom, to the surgical table, we continue our learning through our online educational portal. The IGOT Portal offers additional educational courses while providing a permanent line of communication from IGOT to SMART Course attendees for real-time case support as they implement their new skills.

  •

     - Stage 1: LEARN

Stage 1 of a SMART Course is to LEARN through a site planning visit. IGOT staff travel to the country’s course site to develop the most impactful curriculum with local leaders, meet the local faculty, and plan out the operational details.

  •

     - Stage 2: TEACH

The IGOT faculty along with local surgical education leaders deliver a multi-day program focused on limb-saving surgery & injury management within the existing resources of their healthcare system. First growing their knowledge in the classroom then directly applying the newly-learned skills in the cadaver lab.

  •

     - Stage 3: EVALUATE

Through survey data collection and the IGOT Online Learning Portal, IGOT follows up to ensure the progression of the skills from the classroom to the Operation Room.
